Why you should still get photographed when your already married - Seattle Couples Photographer

Hello! I’m just here today to say - that you can get portraits done when you are already married, and in fact- I encourage it! Why not?

For this shoot we headed to Rattlesnake Lake in North Bend, Washington. We made it up the hour steep hike and then it was all mountain views and love. This hike is best done on a weeknight - weekends are impossibly packed. Also if you wait until right at sunset to shoot, you get to be a little more alone, but then you make the hike down in the dark so you’ll need a headlamp or a flashlight.

I believe that having your portrait taken is important- that’s why I do this! So why not book something fun when your already married or have been together for a long time. I love that these two got matching tattoos when they knew each other just one month! Adorable! I love photographing couples in love - no matter what their marital status!

And by the way- this woman is an instructor at Spira Power Yoga and I just had to plug this place because it changed my life- I love it!

Summer Family Sessions are in Full Swing - Seattle Family Portrait Photographer

I adore working with this family, and I started with them in the beginning when their oldest was still in the oven for maternity photos.

A lot of moms try to get a photo session for each of their kids on or around their birthday. In fact, I photograph several families this way , twice a year ect.

One way some families cut down on the cost of multiple family sessions per year is to do one full session (60-90 minutes depending) and then one mini session that I offer in October. So we go big on the full family session, sometimes head to the mountains or something a little more epic, and then a nice quick and simple 30 minute session in October before Christmas. This way you have your Christmas card done and you get those missing teeth documented (or whatever milestone) documented that is SO important!

They change so fast. Family Photos are priceless.

I added two photos at the end from this family’s October Mini Session! Check out how much Lilly has changed!

Beautiful Seattle Wedding - Seattle Wedding Photographer

I love a back yard wedding! Getting to meet and work with this couple was like a dream come true, like finding your people!

I will never forget during the speeches when the bride’s sister told the story of how these two found each other. She told the story of Victoria manifesting her man with her mind, right down to his ethnicity and his height. MAGICAL!

Also they have a baby on the way! So this wedding was sort of an early maternity shoot as well! Hot damn, that’s exciting!

Congratulations on your life together V and T! Your growing family is lovely! I can’t wait to meet your baby.

Why you should consider an Adventure Family Photo Session- Seattle Family Photographer

Want to make your family photos super duper memorable and go the extra mile (literally) to make them beautiful?

I have tons of information on what to wear and location ideas for your family photo shoot you guys! Gold Creek Pond is special to this family because Travis (a.k.a dad) grew up coming here with his family, and has fond memories of being here with his father. Not only that there is no hike so most of the work is just an hour drive outside of Seattle. And it’s a lovely drive. Even if you choose a location based on it’s beauty alone- it makes the whole family just a little more pumped when they are there for family photos. Being someplace new and exciting is fun for the kids or if your a couple - you can’t beat this beautiful backdrop.

Things to bring. Snacks, maybe a pretty blanket, bug spray, and a warm and (photographable) coat for the kiddos if you have them. Accessories are always fun too, hats scarves, even flowers.

Thank you to Travis, Kelly, Dylan, and Ragen! I have been photographing this family since the their first born was in the belly for maternity photos- so it is an honor to continue to document them! I love this family!

Celebrating Father's Day - Seattle Family Photographer

I’m a total sucker for dads. Maybe it’s because the father figure in my life was sort of a shakey situation that makes me look at dads with a great amount of admiration. They have a huge job to do, and I respect them ….bigtime.

So this is just me saying thank you from the whole world to all of you KICK ASS DADS out there.

Montana Family Photos - Seattle and Montana Family Photographer

WARNING- this blog post has way too many photos and it’s about to have way too many words.

I visit my family in Montana every year over the fourth of July. They live in Arlee, Montana and over the fourth they have a yearly rodeo and pow wow. Although the rodeo makes me both excited and very uncomfortable at the same time, the pow wow speaks to my soul.

My family is great, but this little girl (pictured in way too many photos below)is my little soul mate. She is my mother’s sister’s sons daughter. AKA my cousins kiddo, and she calls me “Auntie Dee” Her little brother is maybe one of the cutest little boys I have ever seen in my life. Sorry about the lack of photos of the little guy, but he was a little young to take on these little adventures that Ahri and I went on. I love being with and photographing these kids so much. This year I will be photographing a wedding while I’m in Montana.

Ahrianna and I connected with our love for animals this year. When watching the rodeo, we squeezed hands when the horses fell or the cows were roped- or when the bulls or horses had something tied around them to make them kick. She asked me questions about how come the bulls are kicking? why would they tie a rope around them to hurt them”? She is the sweetest thing.

The last photograph in this blog is hard to look at. The horse was ok, but we were not. I did not know I got that photo until later that night. I took the shot and dropped the camera to gasp in terror that the horse landed so badly.

I decided to blog this trip so that I can compare my new photographs of the family when I get to Montana next month. I cannot wait to see how she has grown.

Wedding Reception at The Ruins Seattle WA - Seattle Wedding Photographer

J+E

What an amazing Seattle Wedding Adventure!

These two tied the knot up in the mountains and came down to the city to celebrate at maybe the coolest event space Seattle has to offer (in my opinion) The Ruins Event Space Seattle has all the vintage feel and historical artsy vibes that I love. I would highly recommend this space to anyone having a wedding or reception, or just a fancy party, and don’t forget to bring your favorite Seattle Photographer, wink wink.

I love photographing love. Just sayin’ - and these two are obviously in it to win it.

Josh and Ellen - Congratulations on your beautiful union and life together.

THIS DAY!

I love an adventure family session. This one was special to me since I have been photographing Cody and Tara since their engagement shoot. I did their Orcas Island wedding photos. Tara and I did a little sexy fun shoot to surprise Cody on their wedding day with. I came over to photograph August for his newborn session. All leading up to this beautiful PNW famly session at Gold Creek Pond up at Snoqualmie Pass. Heaven!

It’s an hour drive to get up there from West Seattle- but once you park it’s like a 2 minute walk to this beauty. Week nights are lovely up there, nice and mellow. In fact we were almost alone this night.

Tara and Cody did a great job with styling this shoot. Tara texted me along the way anytime she saw something to wear to the shoot. I gave it the thumbs up or down, and they showed up wearing the perfect colors to be photographed in nature.

I am so grateful that I get to photograph this growing beautiful family.

What to wear to your family photo shoot - Seattle family Photographer

HELLO!!! I’m glad your here.

Ok biggest asked and very important question, what do we wear to our family photo shoot this spring/summer?

First let’s address the DO NOT DO list:

Please no logos or words on shirts. Steer clear of bright colors like florescent pink that look awkward in nature. Stick to colors that match your background.Rusts, orange, mustard, navy, dusty blue, burgundy work well in nature. There is no need to dress super fancy as if your going to a wedding, but take it up a notch from day to day.

You don’t have to be all super matchy- matchy, like let’s not all wear white for example. Just chose a complimentary color scheme. Patterns are ok if done right. Texture is fantastic.

Bring layers and keep in mind that its photogenic if your toddler has to wear it. (these are suggestions remember I do not want to seem bossy!)

On patterns- you don’t want to have a toddler in plaid and when dad holds he or she and is also wearing plaid- the patterns go all crazy on your eyeballs- taking the focus off the kiddo.

So keep it simple! Maybe just one or two of you wear a pattern.

Accessories are fun. Hats, scarves can add color and texture.

There are so many dresses for the little girls, the list goes on on and and on. I’ll link to a few examples and try to keep this updated! Here is one idea. I love this company Joyfolie for moms and daughters. (first photo below- both dresses are from there) Here is a great dress suggestion for mom - or something similar. Comfortable and flow.

If moms want to go big - DOEN is my absolute favorite. If not good for inspiration. Freepeople is also great.

DADS: keep it simple!, neutral shirt and casual pants. Maybe no sneakers….

Here is a great Amazon Example

Amazon has tons of great ideas, and I have a Pinterest board for inspiration.

ZARA is a great site for the babes and kiddos

CHECK THIS OUT FOR THE BABES! too cute!

I do not want to make this complicated for you I promise! YOU MIGHT HAVE MOST OF YOUR CLOTHES IN YOUR CLOSET ALREADY!!!

Why in home newborn sessions are important - Seattle Newborn Photographer

So you have done your outdoor maternity session, and your newborn is here! YES! What next? Well, let me just come by your house and make some beautiful portraits of your family with new life in your home. EASY!

This is a stress free way to have some beautiful newborn portraits done in the comfort of your own home.

Home is where the heart is after all! All I need is some good window light and a soft place to lay the baby where they will be nice and warm. No need to pack up and leave when you have a new baby. I photograph you organically, as you are in your home. This is a great change up to going to the park, and some families do this on the regular even when their child grows. What a wonderful way to welcome your new baby into your home. If you have a yard or a green space close we can head there if you would like.

Also it is a great opportunity to get the grandparents in the photos!

What to wear to your maternity session - Fine Art Seattle Maternity Photographer

Styling a shoot is so important. I have to admit, what you wear to your session can make or break the images. I help you along the way with suggestions, and you don't have to break the bank unless you want to.

Sheena and I talked all along the way about what to wear to her maternity session at Lincoln Park in West Seattle. You want to choose clothing that photographs well. I love it when people send me photos or screenshots of ideas on what to wear to your maternity session. I have Pinterest boards and amazon links to steer you in the right direction. We want to work with nature to match it, not work against it. Choosing the right color is important. Patterns can be good -but only when used right. Bring more than one option if you want. Ideas of other things to bring- floppy hat, a cute flower that you love to hold on your bare belly. If you want bare belly shots think of a skirt with a bra-let to wear for that. Or bear it all in the forest!

This is a game changer for me. Motherhood blows my mind, and to be able to get creative and show how I feel about it is a gift.

I love this style for dresses here. This brand is spendy -but give an idea of what looks good out there in nature! And remember, you may already have something you want to wear and that’s ok!

HERE and HERE are links to a lovely dresses I found on Etsy.

Amazon has a few here are links below:

Simple yet pretty

Dramatic and lovely

What to do if your toddler doesn't behave at a family session - Seattle Family Photographer

A lot of parents get very nervous about this topic, and rightfully so. But don’t worry! I got you!

The little ones just might have their own agenda that day- and we are there to try and shape that as best we can for an hour or so. So we roll with it.

This little gal is Vera. She is very spirited and wonderful. She was perfectly listening to me at the beginning of our shoot for the first oh, five minutes. And then she just went rogue! It was awesome… running wild, talking to trees, not wanting anything to do with our plan. We just had to get creative, work a little harder, pull out some tricks, maybe a few bribes along the way. (hint: ice cream)

This post is just so all of you parents know that your child doesn’t have to sit and pose for an hour or more during our session. We take breaks between those posed family photos to go hog wild out in nature. If they need a snack we take a break. Time and time again I have left a session like this, my hair all wild from crawling on the ground or playing in the bushes, filthy jeans, and I will think “what just happened did I get that?”

EVERY single time so much good happens. So we can relax, we can stay calm, use bribes and do our best. But if the kids go rouge- don’t worry I will follow! I can get rogue too.

I delivered 138 photos of this session to this amazing family. WE CAPTURED HER SONS FIRST CRAWL!

This session was nothing short of amazing and with a wild child in the mix. Bring it on, I love it.

Alki Beach and Hamilton Viewpoint Park Family Session - Seattle Family Photographer

We started shooting early on Alki Beach. I asked if it was okay to break the session up and head to a tiny little viewpoint West Seattle park just up the road. The beach is pretty bright for shooting if your not there for sunrise or sunset. This way the family session had both the lovely beach and the more woodsy feels that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. West Seattle is full of location ideas like this, just ask! Lincoln Park and Lowman Beach are an example of two spots just a minute from each other, and add variety to your family session.

P+K.... A lovely destination wedding - Scripps Seaside Forum La Jolla California

Wow you guys. This was definitely one of my favorite weddings I have ever photographed. It was extra special that I knew the bride and groom, so my normal tearing up that I do when people get married was a little more intense. I love Paige. She referred to herself on one of our phone meetings as “Bride Chilla” OMG., YES. Paige was such a beautiful bride, she took everyone’s breath away.

The wedding party stayed at Paradise Point in San Diego. A lovely little renovated resort on the Paradise Cove and Mission Bay. There’s a pool or three, a spa, restaurants . It was perfect. The wedding was in La Jolla California at Scripps Seaside Forum - such a beautiful wedding venue right on the Pacific Ocean.

What a gift to be a wedding photographer. Thank you for choosing me as yours Paige and Kieran. And congratulations on being husband and wife!

Seattle Head shots - Branding Photographs to enhance your business and your YOU.

Hey ya’ll.

I’m often asked if I do head shots or branding shots. I do, but both of my websites sort of just don’t have the space, so I decided to write a little blog about my style of head shots.

I am not a strictly head shot photographer, so mine are a little bit different. Some of these examples are for actors or people who need photographs to talk about their business for their website or social media. Usually I like to start with some standard shots of your beautiful mug, and then mix it up a little.

These types of photographs can be valuable to you if you need people to know who you are and why you do what you do.

I’m here to help!

In Home Newborn Session Normandy Park Seattle

I am in awe of childbirth. I don’t think it’s just because I don’t have kids myself, I think it’s because it is nothing short of freakin amazing. I am so grateful when I am asked to come into someones home and capture this feeling. The feelings of utter happiness, bliss, excitement, fear, and exhaustion. The realest shit you will ever feel.

These family portraits are a gift of love, a gift to your future self- and your future children. And my jaw drops a little at the thought that I get to do this as a passion ( I won’t call it a job)

Congratulations to Lacey, Eric, little Lincoln and Marley the kitty on your newest addition to your family, baby Zane. He is nothing short of a miracle.

Mother Daughter Session, Mother's Day Lincoln Park West Seattle

It was really hard to choose the images for this post. I truly loved everything about this mother daughter family photo session at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.

Erin is a single mamma (Insert crowd cheering) She plays music and also founded Mode Music and Performing Arts Mode offers year round private and group music lessons to both kids and adults. So yeah, I love her. She works so hard a a single mom, I’m so glad she rewarded herself with this portrait session.

Right away it was obvious to me the special bond between this mother and daughter, and I set out to capture the love. And she told me to get weird! YAY! It did not hurt that their pooch Camille was also an amazing addition to this photo shoot.

I recommended they get their dresses from Joyfolie and to my delight they did! All of the planets aligned and Erin decided to make this a family tradition every year.

I already am looking forward to next year.

And we ended with a little smoke bomb and an outfit change! LOVE!

A month in the life of me

Holy Smokes you guys - I had such a crazy 25 days I had to write about it.

One San Diego wedding, two newborn shoots, one maternity shoot, three family photo shoots, one fun conceptual shoot at Goldcreek Pond with a dear friend, one walk around the block with my friend visiting from Australia, one weekend photography retreat at Cannon Beach full of crazy photos and newfound friends.

As I sit and recover, editing through photographs for days and sipping Kombucha and tea, I honestly could not be happier with any of this work. I AM SO GRATEFUL my heart could just explode. Like everywhere into a million pieces. Is every month like this? Heck no. But it will be.

Thank you for listening. Thank you to anyone involved or even reading this for allowing me to express myself through my work.

Have a great day, and I hope your not watching Game of Thrones because it’s literally taking years off my life.

XOXO

Learning and Growing With my Photography. Seattle Fine Art Photographer

I thought I would write a personal post, why the heck not?

I am learning and growing, so I will dive right into my brainwaves and tell you what’s up.

Time to get real. I have always told myself that “I suck at business, I have an artist brain, I’m bad with money”

OMG how rude is that to myself? And also if you say something like that to yourself for years and years, THEN SO IT SHALL BE. Am I right? So I am diving deep into my brain to figure out how to retrain it. And you guys it’s working! I read a couple of books in the last two years that have already and are helping me out with retraining my brain on some bad habits.

This Naked Mind I read this book when I wanted to curb the booze intake 2 years ago. and unexpectedly just QUIT and have never ever been so happy and grateful.

You are a Bad Ass books

I have only read “You are a Badass” and “You are a badass at making money” so far and I can’t get to the next one because I keep listening to these AGAIN~ dog walks, whatever. They are a game changer for me.

Phsycho-Cybernetics This book is a little dry to be honest, probably because Jen Sincero cusses and makes jokes the whole time…..BUT stick with it. It’s about your brain and why we do the things we do. I have been thinking about it non stop!

FORKS OVER KNIVES I am not going to tell you what to put in your body or what I put in mine. But I will say that changing my diet over the years has been a giant work in progress and this documentary just blew my mind.

Health is wealth my friends.

cannon beach Oregon photographer

It’s always wild to me how my photographs can LATER convey to me what is going on in my life. It’s my diary and is always telling me a story or teaching me.

Epiphany!!

WHY DO I DO WHAT I DO?

Ok, why do I love family photos? Is it for the money? Is it something I fell into because I found people just need them and I have a camera? HECK NO!

seattle family portraits

I love empowering MOTHERS! And making them feel beautiful. I love creating family heirlooms for people. I love the thought of you sharing and smiling at the portraits I make for you for years and years. I LOVE the thought of giving you FUTURE happiness. And the thought of your kids enjoying them as they get older- that is HUGE to me! I feel so grateful to know this is one of my purposes in life!

Seattle family photographer

And why the heck do I LOVE shooting with couples for engagement, just for love’s sake, weddings or otherwise? Because people ask me to? HECK NO!

Because this is part of YOUR story! I am a storyteller you guys, I love that shit!

It goes right along with what I said about photographing families. Maybe the kids came before, maybe after, maybe you already have them. Maybe you just have pets. I love SHOWING people feel like their story is important and beautiful. I truly believe LOVE is the answer to so many problems you guys. Love and Gratitude. So if I can help people feel importance, love, and gratitude for their story….. sign me up!

I will end this rambling here! I am so happy to be able to share with you. Thank you!!! XOXOXOXOXO

Why you need ALL of the photographs made at your family portrait session. Because your family is a ART.

I was recently talking to an mom who was interested in having a family photo session. After she wrapped her head the price tag (she told me that it’s totally worth it) she said she does not need more than a few family photographs, and definitely does not need 70-100 images to sort through, too overwhelming. I can see how this would seem so you guys, but it is not the case.

I thought about this for a minute. I know the answer to this because of shooting mini sessions. Every photographer stresses about mini sessions because we always end up shoot more than the 20- 30 minutes. And if the family don’t buy all of the photos- IT KILLS us to just toss them. So we either are sad and throw them away never to be appreciated by anyone, or we give them away at a price that we are not proud of. We end up rushing and only getting the posed shots.

WHY do I need so many? Because you just might love those family portraits later. Imagine you will look back at your 35 year old face when your 80, you won’t be so bummed on your imperfections then.

Because what your kids don’t know how appreciate now - they certainly will later. These are also for them and their kids.

west Seattle family photographer

Your family is a piece of art. Why? Because your the only one like you. There is none other.

Because often the magic happens deeper into the hour session, or at the very end.
